Women of the ELCA
The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) at Shepherd of the Hills is a women’s organization focused on Bible study and stewardship. All women in the congregation are members.
Two circle groups meet monthly (typically on Thursdays) for Bible study using the book Lutheran Women Today and to work on various service projects. The ladies enjoy quilting blankets and assembling health kits, school kits, and layettes for Lutheran World Relief (LWR). They also assemble care packages for college students and military personnel from the congregation, sponsor a Compassion Child, and support other social ministries throughout the year.
Officer elections are held each year to choose new leaders. Leaders for 2007 include:
- President: Evelyn Balke
- President-Elect: Carol Jobman
- Secretary: Sharon Zimmerman
- Treasurer: Charlene Hesser.
A popular fellowship opportunity is the Secret Prayer Sister. Every Valentine’s Day, the WELCA officers serve a brunch, conduct a Bible study, and then hold a secret drawing to match each participant with a prayer partner. Participants prayer for this special person throughout the year and often leave special cards or gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Prayer sisters are revealed at the Valentine’s Day brunch the next year.
This group is a member of a network, Women of the ELCA, comprising nearly 500,000 women across the ELCA.
